Puppy Teething 101

Puppy teething is a super uncomfortable and sometimes painful process for your fur babies. As puppy parents, we want to do everything we can to help our pups through this process. At this point, your puppy is chewing on everything they can get their paws on to relieve some of the pain they could be feeling. Below are some great ways to help your puppy through this time and help them soothe their gums.

  • Rubber teething toys– You can find some rubber teething toys that you can put in the freezer for the best way to help your pup. Be sure to buy these based off the size of your pup and level of activity.
  • Offer Frozen Fruit or Veggies– Freezing some small pieces of fruit can be a great way to help your pup, not only does it soothe their gums, but it also is a good way to give them a good treat. Frozen baby carrots or bananas are the most popular option.
  • Wet a dishrag or towel, twist it, and freeze it. This can be used as a way to help your pup fight boredom, as well as soothe and cool their gums.
  • Meds or natural pain relievers. It is safer to go natural and pharmaceutical free. There are some teething gels that are made for dogs and include natural products. Just be sure to never give your pup human products.
  • Bully sticks. Bully sticks are completely digestible, unlike rawhides, can last a really long time, and won’t break your pups’ teeth.

Sometimes, your puppy may opt to chew on things they are not supposed to. Just remember that this is a very uncomfortable time for them and try not to punish them for chewing on things when they are teething. Instead, redirect them and give them something that they are allowed to chew on. Teething can start when puppies are around 3-4 months old. Here are some signs that your puppy has started teething.

  • Whining and crying
  • Drool
  • Slower eating
  • Increased chewing
  • Irritability
  • Swollen or even bleeding gums
